Deck Questions, Answered
Should I choose pressure-treated or composite decking?
Pressure-treated lumber costs less upfront and takes stain well, but needs re-sealing every couple of years. Composite costs more initially but shrugs off Ontario freeze-thaw cycles with almost no maintenance. We quote both so you can compare real numbers for your project.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Kitchener or Waterloo?
Most decks attached to the house or above a certain height require a building permit from your municipality. We handle the drawings and guide the permit process so your deck is built to code from day one.
How long does a deck build take?
A typical backyard deck takes under a week once materials are on site — a recent client's upper deck, lower deck and spiral staircase were completed in about a week. Larger multi-level builds with pergolas or custom stairs can take longer; your quote includes a clear timeline.
How deep do deck footings need to go in Ontario?
Footings need to extend below the frost line so freeze-thaw cycles can't heave the deck. In southern Ontario that is roughly four feet, and we confirm the exact requirement for your municipality and soil when we quote.
